Summary: The database contains compound specific information. The collection includes compounds with different volatility, chemical reactivity, and biological toxicity. The information for the region of the POPCYCLING-Baltic project is regarded as priority within the database, but the information for the neighbouring regions has also been collected. The EDB contains the information of POP concentrations in: the air, wet and dry atmospheric deposition, seawater, freshwater, surface sediments, three species of biota: mussels, cod and herring, and selected vegetation. In addition to the POP concentrations, the EDB provides the information on POP physical phase distribution, as well as on parameters such as POC and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The information on detection limits and the type of sampling and analysis techniques has also been given for the included sets of data.
Summary: The emission database, named the POPBAL database has been prepared in native Access format (80mb) and contains the following information: POLLUTANT YEARS GRIDDED HCB (emissions) 70,75,80,85,90,93 Yes (by crop). DDT (use) 70,75,80,85,90,93 Yes (by crop). HCHs (use and emission) Annual, 70-96 Yes (by crop). B(a)P (emissions) 70,75,80,85,90,93 Yes (by population). Sum of PCB (emissions) 70,75,80,85,90,93 Yes (by population). Sum of PCDD/F (emissions) 70,75,80,85,90,93 Yes (by population). 17 pCDD/F congeners (emissions) 70,75,80,85,90,93 No Emission maps with the grid system of 50km x 50 km have been prepared for all studied compounds and the reference years agreed within the project. These maps have been used by the project modelers. The structure of the emission database has been prepared along major source categories defined within the EU CORINAIR program and the UN ECE EMEP program with some minor modifications. The following information is available in the POPBAL database: -identification of activities generating the emissions, -magnitude of the activity, -process identification, -fuel identification, -year of emission and country, -amount of emission, -emission factors, and -references.
Summary: The POPCYCLING-Baltic model, a typical multi-media mass balance model, divides the environment in 85 boxes or compartments, which are considered well-mixed and homogeneous, both with respect to the environmental characteristics and chemical contamination. These environmental phases are then linked by a variety of intercompartmental transfer processes. The division of the Baltic Sea environment into compartments was based on the following considerations: -The units can be identified in physical geographical terms (e.g. water sheds). -The units can be considered well mixed with respect to the time scales relevant to POPs, and -The units have similar characteristics with respect to environmental properties and emission rates of POPs. The basic graphic units in the model are the eight aquatic sub-basins of the Baltic Sea, and their respective drainage basins, namely: Bothnian Bay, Bothnian Sea, Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Riga, Baltic Proper, Danish Straits, Kattegat, Skagerrak. The model is meant to be used as a tool to assess the current level and to elaborate reduction scenarios for the contamination of the environment in the Baltic Sea region by POPs. It is probably the only assessment tool of the type available in Europe at present, taking into account its potential to study the dynamics and kinetics of the POP transport in the marine environment.
