Automated volcano monitoring system

Objective

To develop and build a rugged Automated Volcano Monitoring System that can be used in logistically difficult terrain without public facilities of power or telecommunication. Information to be gathered consist of a large number of parameters from widely separated sensors. Acquisition and interpretation of data in real-time is a paramount necessity in order to efficiently monitor high risk volcanoes and provide society with advance warning in times of volcanic unrest.

The research team will build an user friendly real-time data processing system that will compare different
parameters and perform mathematical modelling. The development work will include:
1. A real-time display of the multiparameter data in a familiar computer environment will be made.
2. Automated transfer of the processed data to multiple recipients by international computer networks.
3. A network of cost-effective single frequency GPS receivers for the monitoring of ground deformation.
4. Integration of already existing sensors and a low power seismic array.
The system design can be applied either as a permanently installed long term monitoring system or, by using
portable components, as a mobile early warning system. A European target volcano will be selected for
installation and testing. The project will aim at transparency of different modules to ensure that individual parts
can be applied at different volcanoes with minimal effort and cost. The system can be easily adapted to other
environmental monitoring tasks.
