Development and experimental validation of advanced modelling techniques in engineering seismology and earthquake engineering

Objective

Development and experimental validation of advanced numerical codes to predict local variations of ground motion due to site specific effects, to improve methods for seismic structural response and to localise earthquakes.
- Application of the validated models and techniques in representative European sites and cities (Thessaloniki, Benevento, Nice, Grenoble, Barcelona, Lisbon, Li
and reliability of the prediction models, aiming at a direct application in urban planning and the reduction of seismic risk.
- Creation of a European database of the EURO-SEISTEST recordings and surveys, which offers the opportunity to earth scientists, seismologists and engineers to test and calibrate their numerical tools and to improve their experiences and knowledge.

These objectives will be achieved through:
- Development of advanced numeraical codes and improvement of existing ones, for the theoretical estimation
of the seismic ground motion variation and the site effects, taking into account the 3D effects, path effects, the
heterogeneity and the non-linearities of the soil behaviour and the source effects. Tools for RC frame-masonry
infill interaction; soil-structure interaction.
- Improvement of the existing, free-field and structural strong-motion network of EUROSEISTEST.
Improvement of the existing seismological network and local reference geodetic networks. Improvement and
extension of the monitoring system of the model structure. Better constrain the EURO-SEISTEST structure
though complementary geophysical and geotechnical surveys (execution of a very deep, > 200 m borehole).
- Organisation and realisation of a special temporary seismic survey to study the 3D wave fields, the effects of
the surface faults and the soil - structure interaction effects on the ground motion.
- Improvement of experimental techniques for site response estimation. - Development of statistical models for the input parameters and calibration of stochastic ground motion models.
- Validation of all numerical codes and experimental techniques with the EURO-SEISTEST data.
- Application of the improved prediction models and techniques to earthquake prone European cities and
comparison with actual data and recordings.
- Creation of a EURO-SEISTEST database aiming at enhancing availability at European and international level -
of well-documented, experimental data and surveys, in a perfectly known site.
The database will be among the amin deliverables of this project.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
