To analyze and assess appropriate environmental policy instruments that can be used for the implementation of least cost Ozone abatement strategies in Europe.
OBJECTIVES:
To analyze and assess appropriate environmental policy instruments that can be used for the implementation of least cost Ozone abatement strategies in Europe.
DESCRIPTION:
Increasing ambient concentrations of Ozone during summer seasons in the troposphere over Europe are an unresolved problem in the field of air pollution control. There are two primary issues:
i) how to efficiently reduce precursor emissions, leading to a decrease in Ozone;
ii) how to fairly implement such Ozone reduction strategies in Europe.
To answer these questions, research activities are focused on the following points:
i) the simulation of realistic scenarios for the reduction of Ozone precursor emissions in European countries and regions;
ii) the identification of sets of emission reduction measures, which reduce tropospheric Ozone concentrations below critical levels and reduce the costs of damage to human health and vegetation;
iii) the analysis of the economic effects of efficient Ozone abatement strategies in EU countries;
iv) the analysis and assessment of environmental policy instruments for EU Ozone reduction strategies.
The results of the project will help to formulate an efficient environmental policy for the reduction of tropospheric Ozone, taking account of national and regional differences in the policy related distribution of costs and benefits. The main results will be analyzed in such a way as to be applicable to other pollutants.
