Satellite Remote Sensing for Lake Monitoring

Objectif

This research project intends to develop new methods for using EO (Earth Observation) satellite data for lake monitoring and management in Europe. Lakes and reservoirs represent major freshwater resources, and their economic implications are evident; then, the implementation of methods for monitoring and properly managing of lakes is a priority in order to prevent pollution and loss of beneficial uses and to ensure that future generations can benefit from an unspoilt resource.
Main objectives are:
- the optimisation and actual limits in the use of existing and near-futureEO data in this field o f application;
- the exploration of new correlation between biological, chemical and physicalparameters with the remotely sensed data;
- the definition of future space sensor needs for monitoring of European lakes; - the definition of new protocols for standards in the acquisition of remotelysensed data of limnological interest;
- a procedure for integration of EO data information in a suitable GIS in orderto design, in the near future, an automated model of lake surveillance. Expected most important advances are seen in:
- the identification of the ost suitable methodologies to correlate remotelysensed data to limnological parameters;
- the definition of a reliable surveying tool for lake water quality analysis,that is expected to be less dependent on the in-situ calibration measurementsthan the usual routine applications.
- the direct implication of either public or private water management agenciesand enterprises, at different level of territorial competence. Majorindustrial implications concem the design and creation of new cost-effectivetools for monitoring basic environmental emergencies for the European lakes. The project is developed in 3 years and in 5 work-packages and it is characterised by a joint participation between limnologists and remote sensing experts to:
- the identification of problems for lake water management;
- the selection of the study-sites;
- the historical data analysis and eventually past emergency case-study; - the at ground bio-chemical and physical measurements;
and to:
- the multistage remote sensing approach: satellite and aerial in particular; - the hyperspectral investigations;
- the radar multifrequency applications;
- the at ground spectroradiometric and eventual other remote measurements. Partnership is formed with 8 participants, representing 3 EU members: Finland, Italy and Sweden; and the Joint Research Centre of Ispra. Moreover, 3 subcontracts are planned for specific services.
The project is coordinated by CNR (National Research Council of Italy).

Programme(s)
