Earth observation (EO) data are useful for coastal applications, and their integration with geographical information systems (GIS) can cover end user requirements for the presentation and analysis of data from multiple sources, for such applications as coastal planning. New applications can include the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for the design and location of wind and wave power installations. However, for coastal/maritime applications, regular data coverage is necessary. For SAR image mode in particular, this requirement is not met by existing data policy and the requirement that data must be ordered in advance. High-resolution optical data are valuable, but coverage is sporadic due to cloudiness.
End users are often unconvinced of the value of EO data, in particular because of poor coverage. COASTMON has sought to remedy this by arranging additional end user workshops. The benefits of using EO data may be greater in regions outside the European Economic Area than in more well-developed areas such as the North Sea, and this has been dealt with by adjusting the COASTMON work plans.
