Objectif
There is a continual growing demand for safer equipment, buildings and systems under earthquake loading. However, at the same time financial constraints place emphasis on finding cost-effective ways to enhance earthquake safety and reduce liability. A basic problem in earthquake resistant design is the selection of ground motions generated by the "design" earthquake. Near-source (strong) ground motions determine the forces endangering engineering structure. They also provide detailed information concerning the source mechanism and the propagation path of the seismic waves generated by the earthquake. Strong ground-motion records are therefore of major interest to both earth scientists and engineers, and an indispensable tool for establishing EUROCODE-8. There is then a clear need to present to the European community a dataset of wholly European high quality strong-motion data for use both in research and industry. This requires actual strong-motion time-histories and resulting response spectra and, equally importantly, reliable measurement (seismological) parameters.
The proposed programme is aimed at collecting, processing, storing and making available via CD-ROM and the Internet a database and a databank concerning parameters of European shallow and intermediate depth earthquakes. This will include associated triaxial strong-motion acceleration records (more than 1000), both in uncorrected and corrected form, and corresponding response spectra. Database parameters will include event date, location, depth and size whilst information concerning individual records will include station location distance, peak accelerations, instrument type and location, and foundation (soil) type.
In addition appropriate software will be provided allowing the user to search the database and databank for the selection of design input data.
The work content is distributed amongst four organizations:
1. Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (ICSTM), London. 2. Ente per le Nuove tecnologie, l'Energia e l'Ambiente (ENEA), Rome. 3. ENEL S.p.A. Rome.
4. Institut de Protection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IPSN) of the Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (CEA), Paris.
Compilation of uncorrected and corrected data is the responsibility of ICSTM, ENEA and ENEL whilst ICSTM are also responsible for determining response spectra. The database will be compiled by ICSTM together with information provided by ENEA and ENEL. CEA/IPSN are responsible for writing the necessary software and for the production of the CD-ROM and appropriate documentation. Establishment of the Internet site falls to ICSTM.
The principal deliverables will be a Master CD-ROM, access to an Internet site and user documentation.
