Objective
The PAAGE proposal is submitted by MATRA MARCONI SPACE, JRC, NRSC, ITCF, SAINCO, INRA and representative user/partners involved in agri-business, agriculture and water management areas.
PAAGE stands for "Pilot project for Agriculture and AGri-Environment". Its major objective is to validate the value of a service based on superspectral imaBng remote sensing techniques. For that purpose, PAAGE includes airborne data acquisition over three sites (Spain, France and Great Britain).
This proposal largely relies on previous activities carried-out by MATRA MARCONI SPACE, in particular the development and successful experimentation of superspectral imaging techniques and the assessment of the economic viability of a future space system using these techniques.
The major targetted applications are:
- diagnosis for precision farming to improve the cultivation processes, andto reduce the required amount of fertilisers, pestisides and waterressources, and in turn to mitigate the related environmental issues. - crop inventory to support the application of European policies - yield forecast which is of interest for actors in the agri-business and inthe frame of international or European negociations
The proposed work content consists of six major sets of activities:
- the first one is devoted to the analysis of the user needs, the selectionof the sites, the definition of the image acquisitions, the in-situmeasurements and the adaptations of the existing processing algorithms. - the second one consists of the preparation of the data acquisition campaignin terms of logistics (manpower, equipment, airborne instrument,...) and ofsetting-up the data processing tool, as a near real time data processing ismandatory for precision farming service experiment.
- the third and the fourth ones include the data acquisition proper (in-situand airborne) and the generation of the products.
The airborne acquired images serve as input to the simulation of satellitegenerated images.
- the fifth one is the product validation which is based on ground truthmeasurements and comparison with informations extracted from the images.During this phase a true precision farming experiment will be performedusing recommendations based on the image products.
- the last one includes the evaluation of the service value (social andeconomic) brought by a future space system using superspectral imagingtechniques, and a re-assessment of the economic viability of that system.
