Peroxy radical initiative for measurements in the environment.

Objective



Hydroperoxy radicals (HO2 ) and organic peroxy radicals (RO2) play important roles in the production and loss of tropospheric O3 the formation of other secondary photooxidants such as peroxides and organic nitrates and in the night-time production of OH radicals and decomposition of PAN. Their ground-based measurement may be made using 4 techniques: (i) Modulated Chemical Amplification (MCA) which utilises modulated chemical amplification of NO2 by HO2 radicals in the presence of NO and CO, with RO converted to HO2 via reaction with NO and O2; (ii) Matrix Isolation/Electron Spin Resonance (MIESR) in which HO2, CH3C(O) O2 and RO2 are quantified by ESR spectroscopy after being isolated in D2o matrices at 77K; (iii) Fluorescence Assay with Gas Expansion (FAGE) and (iv), Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) two almost identical techniques whereby HO2 is reacted with NO to form OH radicals, which are then detected by LIF spectroscopy.
Each technique currently suffers to different degrees from uncertainties and limitations: inlet system losses and production of radicals (particularly OH and HO2), calibration methodologies for OH, HO2, CHlO2 and CH3C(O)O2 and NO2, relative sensitivities of detection for OH, HO2 and RO2, and corrections for positive interferences such as inlet decomposition of PAN, PNA (peroxynitric acid) and H2O2.
PRIME proposes to address these uncertainties and limitations of the MCA and FAGE/LIF techniques for measurements of peroxy radicals in the troposphere through concerted laboratory, field measurement and numerical modelling studies. The aims and objectives of PRIME are:
- to carry out a programme of laboratory and modelling studies in order todevelop improved instrumentation for ground-based or airborne measurementsof HO2 and RO2 in the troposphere. Novel inlet systems and calibrationsources for OH, HO2, CH302 and CH-C(O)O radicals and NO, will be developed,while the improvements will address the specificity, sensitivity, accuracyand precision of the measurements.
-to evaluate the improved instrumentation in a field measurement study that is designed not only to compare measurements of peroxy radicals made with the MCA and FAGE/LIF techniques, but also, in combination with modelling studies, to gain deeper understanding of the sources and sinks of peroxy radicals in tropospheric chemisry.
These aims and objectives will be realised through a well managed Work Programme.
PRIME represents a transnational, multi-disciplinary collaboration with complementary roles played by each Partner. Results will be widely disseminated at several major national and international conferences within Europe and North America and by several publications in international peer reviewed scientific journals.
