Summary: Vertical particle fluxes were measured applying condensation particle counter (CPC) model TSI 3010 in the eddy covariance technique. The EC is a widely used method to measure gas fluxes. Different aspects of the method have been described. During the measurement campaign in the spring 1998 (Biofor1), in parallel to the particle counter another of the same model counter was deployed (using one common sampling line). Counters operation controlling temperatures were shifted to have minimum detectable particle size 7 and 14 nm. There was an attempt to estimate experimentally vertical transport of particles between these sizes. In the case of evident flux upward source of particles is between the ground level and the measurement point. During the measurement campaign in spring 1999 (biofor3) CPC TSI 3010 was modified to operate at 3 1pm sampling flow rate (10 nm cut-off size). The modification allowed increasing time resolution of the instrument and detection of relatively faster in time scale fluctuations. In parallel the same type of CPC was deployed operating at standard conditions. 1 1pm sampling flow rate and 10 cut-off size to validate the concentration measurements of the modified CPC.
Summary: Continuous measurements (every 10 min) of submicron aerosol number size distribution shows ca 50 days per year with clearly detectable aerosol particle formation events. Almost 20% of those events will continue sufficiently long to produce particles with diameter over 80nm, which can be counted to be cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). The aerosol formation is connected with physics, chemistry, meteorology and biology. The result can be used as a part of global models for comparison purposes and input parameters.
Summary: The developed code on ternary nucleation of water - sulphuric acid and ammonia shows significant nucleation to occur at atmospheric conditions. The development of the code has focus on the thermodynamics and kinetics of the nucleation process. The parameterization will be available for regional and global aerosol models.
