Objectif
This is a Concerted Action on the theme of Machine Vision in Remotely Sensed Image Comprehension. It primarily concerns the potential role which could be played by advanced computer vision algorithms in the analysis of very high resolution optical imagery which is becoming available from new satellites (especially the new generation of "Small-Sats"). A subsidiary goal is to also examine the role of machine vision techniques in the analysis of new multi-view angle imagery. In addition to this, an important further objective is to stimulate the take up of advanced visual processing algorithms in the remote sensing community and by commercial entities in particular.
The primary objectives of the activity proposed herein are to:
a) assess what has been achieved so far throughout the European Union (and elsewhere) on the application of machine vision or visual processing techniques in remote sensing
b) evaluate the potential benefits to be derived from pursuing further research and development on this theme in a coordinated manner
c) draw up an appropriate research agenda for the future taking into account the results and conclusions of (a) and (b)
d) disseminate information on the commercial potentiial of visual processing algorithms (and new very high resolution imagery) to the industrial and user communities.
These objectives will be met by carrying out three principal activities:
(i) holding an open European workshop on machine vision techniques in remote sensing (to satisfy objective (a))
(ii) subsequently holding a more restricted research concertation meeting to evaluate the results of the workshop and to set future research priorities and an appropriate research agenda (to satisfy objectives (b) and (c))
(iii) organizing dissemination activities on the potential uses of new very high resolution imagery and advanced visual analysis techniques -this will specifically include an industry briefing meeting (to satisfy objective (d)).
In order to ensure that all relevant national activities are taken into consideration and are involved in all activities, a "national point of contact" is to be used in each member state of the European Union to identify existing national projects, experts, and industry representatives -especially from small and medium sized enterprises (SME's) .
