HALOMAX (halogens during the chlorine maximum) has been a project which combined balloon borne measurements of the complete chlorine and bromine family (i.e. source-, reservoir-, and reactive species) at both high latitudes during winter and mid latitudes during spring/summer. Measurements of the species of chlorine and bromine families have also been compared with results from photochemical modeling and from previous observations. The observations of the project were carried out by three balloon gondolas combining different. instrumentations with the best observational techniques available that provided complementary information and were able to observe the chlorine and bromine families as completely as possible.
The total bromine content of the stratosphere was determined by two approaches. I.e. using the source gases and using the measured Bro and the model partitioning of Bro to total bromine. The two methods give consistent results, I.e. total stratospheric bromine determined from the source gases and from BrO is 18.4 +/- 1.9 ppt and 21.5 +/- 3 ppt respectively. This yields an influx of 3.1 +/- 3.5 ppt bromine.
