Modelling agroecosystems under global environmental change

Objectif

New formulations of environmentally friendly lubricants, EALs, based on sunflower and synthetic ester oils. New compositions and structures of low friction coatings, LFCs. Experimental tribological results from LFC/LFC and LFC/EAL tests. The gained knowledge is used in optimising LFC/EAL tribosystems and finally to facilitate the application/validation of these tribosystems in grinding machines and hydraulic components.
This project, Modelling Agroecosystems under Global Environmental Change (MAGEC), will provide modules of soil / plant interactions in agroecosystems to contribute to patch (<0.lkm) and regional scale (10-100km) modelling frameworks already under development within the EU-TERI programme. MAGEC will contribute to area 1.2 of the Environment and Climate programme. Specifically, it addresses Section 1.2.2 on Biospheric Processes, and is intended to be implemented through the EU-TERI initiative. MAGEC addresses issues of climate and land-use change in agroecosystems and contributes to existing EU-TERI-funded programmes; in particular it complements ETEMA by providing descriptions of agroecosystems. The link with ETEMA is strong: PIK, who are leading partners in ETEMA are also partners in MAGEC and through this contact the complementary approaches between the two projects can be harmonised from the start of MAGEC. The added value of such an initiative is clear.
Agroecosystems cover over half of the land area of the EU and the greatest potential changes in land-use are likely to occur on this land yet they are not currently represented under the EU-TERI programme. Agroecosystems are an essential component of any patch and regional scale modelling framework. The objectives of MAGEC are :

a) to evaluate to process descriptions used by leading agroecosystem soil and plant models,
b) to use the best process descriptions to formulate new agroecosystem modules appropriate for use in patch and regional scale modelling frameworks developed elsewhere with EU-TERI,
c) to test the accuracy and precision of the new soil and plant modules d) to incorporate the agroecosystem modules into existing patch/regional scale modelling frameworks, e) test the performance of the coulped soil / plant agroecosystem modules in patch/regional scale modelling frameworks, and
f) contribute an agroecosystem module to a modelling tool under development elsewhere that will allow policy makers in the EU and individual governments to study the environmental impacts of land-use and climate change and examine scenarios for mitigation.

The objectives will be acheived using soil and vegetation models available to the partnership. Long-term agronomic experiments at partnership sites following an East-West transect will provide much of the data required for module evaluation, and links with existing networks of agronomic experiments (e.g. the Soil Organic Matter Network - SOMNETand the GCTE Wheat Network) will provide further data against which the modules will be evaluated. Bioindicator measurements will be taken at partnership sites for the purposes of module testing. Statistical techniques already developed among the partnership will be used to objectively evaluate the performance of the uncoupled modules, to provide a sensitivity analysis, and to conduct an uncertainty analysis. In the last phase of the project, coupled modules of soil/plant interactions in agroecosystems will be tested and incoporated into existing patch and regional scale modelling frameworks.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
