STREAMER proposes a strongly customer driven project focusing on customers needs. STREAMER makes remotely sensed data of atmospheric ozone and related ground level UV-B intensitiy available not only to scientists but to a broad spectrurr. of individuals, companies, and government groups needing this information. Focus is on forecasting. Peculiar structures such as ozone mini-holes and streamers are detected at an early stage to early warn against them. This information is needed by weather services to improve the long-terrn weather forecasting, by public health authorities to define a strategy to better fight cancers, by chemical industries concemed with developing shieldings for UV-exposed sensitive materials such as plastics or rubber, by agriculture to develop a strategy to overcome UV-induced decrease in crop yield, by TV-media and environmental authorities hoping to increase the sensitivity of the general public to environmental risks.
The well balanced (7 partners from 4 EU countries) and competent consortium understands that in the coming decade, the usefulness of remotely sensed data will be limited not by technology, but by user access to the data collected through space technology. Therefore, the consortium is convinced that the key to expanding applications lies in ease of access to information. The philosophy behind STREAMER is to make use of the well proven end-to-end philosophy: starting with the processing of the satellites bits and bytes, its interpretation into meaningful information and finally ending up with the provision of an information system that allows easy access to the information required; an operational inforrnation system available to all users - whether a large government agency or a small local firm - that will provide overall benefits for the public good and further the economic interests of Europe.
STREAMER is designed to support the EU-programme Europe against cancer and the EU-project ELDONET.
The focus of STREAMER is on
a) operational near-real time nowcasting of european
- total column ozone (now from GOME, later also from ENVISAT) - ozone vertical resoluted profiles (now from GOME, later ENVISAT) - ground-level UV-B intensity including topography and cloud-cover (cloudsfrom METEOSAT / NOAA)
b) operational one-ay forecasting of
- total column ozone
- ozone vertical resoluted profiles
- ground-level UV-B intensity including topography cloud-cover is predictedby a complex Global Circulation Model (GCM) also being usedfor weatherforecasting purposes
- horizontal resolution of data products is about 40 x 40 km - all data products will be validated through a ground-based station network(WMO-network for ozone, EU-network ELDONET and other selected stationsfor UV, selected satations for ozone profiles)
c) operational on-line archiving to allow an on-line access of STREAMER data-products and additional related relevant environmental inforrnation via an easy-to use WWW-GIS.
