Enchancement of integrated water management strategies with water reuse at catchment scale

Objective

Objectives
The purpose of the project is to develop, in a multinational and multidisciplinary effort, a comPrehensive modellina tool for the implementation of sustainable integrated water management strategies at catchment scale in different regions of the European Community and to analyse the possibility for water reuse development. The main aims and characteristics of this new structural comprehensive model are:
- To propose a relevant methodology for in-depth analysis and comparison of various water management scenarii including wastewater reuse and other water saving solutions. - To formulate comprehensive criteria and keys for success for a given water management scheme including financial, technical, environmental, demographic, political and social factors as well as speeific local constraints and conditions. - To ensure the balance between water resource and demand at catchment or regional scale. - To guarantee public health and environment protection recommending suitable water quality monitoring programs based on appropriate water quality descriptors. - To propose adapted water and wastewater management schemes based on new comprehensive criteria, state of the art knowledge and recent technological advances. - To identify the best water management strategy at catchment scale ensuring sustainable development at competitive costs.
The proposed research prograrn is based on specific case studies on some of the largest and oldest European sites ùvhere water scarcity prompted the implementation of global water management schemes integrating wastewater reuse practices.
Expected Outcome
- The project will provide a critical analysis of this current advanced water management experience, enabling to better define of the specific regional needs, as well as the key factors for success or failure of a given water management plan. - The benefits of reelaimed wastewater as a new alternative resouree will be assessed and ineluded as an important element of the integrated water management strategy at eatehment seale. - The final recommendations can be used by decision markers and engineers as relevant guidelines for implementation of new technical solutions, monitoring programs and modelling tools. - The in depth analysis of the leading existing water management praetices, including water reuse will enable the identifieation of new topics and specific subjeets for further more fundamental research in the field of water industry and management. - Such an approach will lead to improvements in the eost of water management in urban and rural areas and will enhance the efficiency of water resource management with an important economic impact on the region's sustainable development. - Another important impact of the proposed study will be the definition of the social impacts of multisource water supply and water reuse.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
