Objectif
The project deals with the realisation of a holographic ground probing radar (HGPR) prototype suitable to monitor contaminated soils and able to identify, w ith high spatial resolution, the presence and the diffusion plume of non aqueou s pollutants liquids (NAPL). The HGPR will be also adapted to be applied in arc haeological prospecting. The project claims to overcome the limit of traditi onal ground probing radar that is: low spatial resolution and artefacts in resu lting images. The HPGR technique will give, in the investigation frequency band between 0.1 GHz to 1 GHz, a higher spatial resolution to the depth of some met er. The high level of the project is justified by the strategical interest i n the environmental science to deliver a new non invasive methodology for a fas t and accurate detection and monitoring of the polluted areas. The main adva ntages of the holographic radar respect to the conventional ground probing rada r technology will reflect on: a drastic reduction of the survey costs, a best estimation of the extension of the contaminated area, permitting a bet ter evaluation of the environmental risks and the soil remediation strategy. The new technology could be applied on several targets, including pipe and pip e line detection, leakage from underground tanks and for the detection of unexp loded ordnances. The main goals of the project are: to realise the prot otype of the holographic radar, to check the system performances in the en vironmental applications. The different tasks of the projects are linked on different levels: hardware device development, software development and laborat ory and in field tests of the system. The final product of the project will be a complete prototype capable to operate in field; the prototype will be read y to be furtherly engineered and manufactured.
