quality of secondary fuels for pulverised fuel co-combustion (SEFCO)

Objectif

Objectives and Problems to be solved:
Currently most of the waste materials in Europe are deposited on landfills. Consumption of land, long-term reactions on the landfills and emission of green house gases have a negative influence on the living conditions in Europe. In addition, power production has to be done in a less CO2 engendered way. Thermal utilisation of secondary fuels recovered from waste materials could be a cost effective and short-term available way for the reduction of CO2 emissions. For the propagation of the co-combustion technology in power plants the prevention of disturbance on plant operation and harmful effect on the environment represents a vital premise. Therefore the main objective of this project is to acquire comprehensive knowledge of the characteristics of selected fuels as feedstock, the impact of co-combustion of waste materials on operation and emissions. This is necessary to pave the way for a wide use of this technology.
Description of the work:
The basic idea of the project is that most waste materials are composed of a few major components (e.g.: paper, plastic, wood, inert material, biomass). If the composition of the waste is available, i.e. the shares of the defined components, and the impact of the pure waste components is known, it will be possible to predict the behaviour of the waste fuel mix. The main objective of the project is to establish a database of the impact of different pure wastes on the combustion, emission and operation in order to be able to predict the behaviour of waste mixes.
Within the project different partners, mainly industrial or industrial orientated partners with previous experiences in the field of co-combustion, investigate in close cooperation- to identify the main waste streams and their constituents,
- to develop a method to characterise the mix of waste fuels,
- to investigate the milling and combustion behaviour of pure wastes in pilot scale in order to establish a data base,
- to systematically investigate the behaviour of waste mixtures by using synthetic wastes (mixture of pure wastes) in pilot scale,
- to test the prediction of the combustion behaviour of waste fuels from pilot and large scale,
- to develop a procedure for the prediction on combustion, emission, and operational behaviour.
Expected Results and Exploitation Plans:
First, potential recovered fuels will be spotted and profoundly investigated. Advanced methods to analyse the composition of secondary fuels and secondary fuel mixtures are planned to be developed. Results of preparation and handling tests, which indicate appropriate grinding and transport technology for the different fuels, will be available. Combustion tests with different fuel fractions will provide information about co-combustion properties of secondary fuels and fuel mixtures, quality requirements for preparation, beneficial process parameters for low emissions and stable operation. The results of the investigations will be made available for the public. A detailed and systematic knowledge about the impact of different waste fuels on emissions will lead to a better acceptance of waste co-combustion by the people and the authorities.

Programme(s)
