DEMOS is developing a suite of network-independent educational software tools to support distributed distance learning, covering the broad spectrum of educational needs of a wide range of users. The focus has been on developing multimedia computer supported collaborative work (CSCW) applications which use heterogeneous technologies in their telecommunications networks. The system incorporates several different distance and in-classroom learning facilities. DEMOS can facilitate collaborative work with hypermedia documents (hierarchical multimedia documents with links) at different learner sites. The system also manages the sharing of Windows applications, student videoconferencing as well as interactive learning environments such as discovery-based simulations. A structured system of multimedia messages and forums allows asynchronous communication, data exchange and file transfer. Various tools are being developed by the DEMOS consortium to meet the varying needs of user groups in different environments.
