MULTIMEDIA OPTIMISATION AND DEMONSTRATION FOR EDUCATION IN MICROELECTRONICS

Exploitable results

The MODEM project exploits new commercial technologies for training in microelectronics including tools which model microelectronics manufacturing processes, courseware co-authoring tools for teachers and trainers, 'pick and mix' style courseware facilities for greater teacher flexibility as well as customised Lotus Notes software for increased communication. MODEM is also facilitating the training of teachers in the process of multimedia courseware development for microelectronics training using standard established software tools such as Multimedia ToolBook. A simulation-based learning environment has been designed and developed. This is based on a commercial software package called 'Virtual Wafer-Fab' (VWF), a professional process and device simulation package. MODEM is also verifying simulation-assisted learning for remote students using the VWF environment. MODEM is taking a unique approach to microelectronics tele-teaching through the development of new modules on microelectronics design such as very large scale integration (VLSI), which includes aspects of their design and development, as well as advanced materials research. The project culminates in the verification of an integrated MODEM facility for the tele-teaching of a number of engineering and science students and the evaluation of multimedia-based tools for the teaching of engineering and science to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
