TRAINING NETWORK FOR THE EUROPEAN CAR INDUSTRY

Objective

The purpose of TECAR is to harness telematics to the need for cost-effective employee training in the EU car industry. It will develop an in-company service for access to a network of distributed multimedia training material on demand, enabling trainees to assume a more active role during independent and group work than previously. An ISDN network-based server for archiving and delivering multimedia will be accessed via a system allowing easy navigation through the material. Project prototypes will integrate new developments with existing user-site infrastructure and training schemes, such as business TV

In the European automobile industry there is a strong demand for the use of new technologies to make training more efficient and less expensive. The overall objective of the TECAR project is to provide telematics-based solutions to meet the training needs of employees in this area.

The main scenario to be investigated in TECAR is on-demand training. A service will be developed supporting access to a network of distributed multimedia training material. In real-life experiments at two major European car manufacturers - Mercedes and Fiat - trainees will be able to perform autonomous and group work, whereby the on-demand access will give the trainee a more active role than in currently used training methods.

The TECAR technology will involve an ISDN-based multimedia server for archiving and delivering multimedia (videos, CBTs etc.). The server can be accessed via a system allowing for easy navigation between training material. The TECAR prototypes will integrate new developments with already existing infrastructure and training schemes at the users' sites, such as business TV.

The target group of TECAR will be employees of car manufacturers. However the solutions are expected to contribute to many new training services based on multimedia telematics, and can also be applied to other areas such as tele-cooperation, thus providing an integrated training and work environment.
