Objective
The aim of the project is to establish a database for 'reference values' (normal levels) of 'heavy' metals (i.e. toxic metals such as mercury, cadmium, chromium and lead) in human tissues and fluids by evaluation of publications in the international scientific literature.
The inclusion of other elements will be assessed subsequently. According to the quality of published information, presentation of tentative 'reference values' may be allowed for some metals, for others 'indicative values' will be suggested.
The data will be stored in a computer, making retrieval of desired information easily accessible to users.
The study will include individuals from non-contaminated areas as well as those from contaminated areas in Europe. The data will systemized in accordance with non-occupational exposure conditions that may influence the fluid of tissue level, such as fish-consumption (mercury in the blood), smoking (cadmium in kidney cortex), dust inhalation (lead in the blood and in the bones), etc.
