Objective
- Determination of the distribution of primary and secondary pollutants to validate models of atmospheric chemistry and to understand the transformation as well as transport of pollutants on fauna, flora and materials in Europe.
- Laboratory and field experiments of physical and chemical processes involved in gases, aerosols and droplets in order to establish the formation of secondary pollutants, in particular photo-oxidants and acidic substances.
- The development of fast response, sensitive and selective instruments for laboratory, ground and airborne measurements; enhancement of the quality of observational programs by stringent test and intercalibration of instruments.
- Quantitative evaluation of gas and aerosol fluxes between the biosphere and atmosphere and validation of deposition models; establishment of an emission inventory of environmentally important trace constituents emitted by the biosphere.
- Development of models which describe the transport and transformation of pollutants and which can be used to predict the effects of air pollution on the air quality on a regional and global scale and to calculate the influence of proposed regulatory measures.
- Improvement of emission inventory of substances emitted by anthropogenic activities, e.g. industry, traffic, with main emphasis on trace constituents contributing to the build-up of photo-oxidants and acids.
