PALEOOCEANOGRAPHY OF THE NORTH EASTERN ATLANTIC OCEAN DURING THE LAST CLIMATIC CYCLE

Objective

A DETAILED SEDIMENTOLOGICAL, MICROPALEONTOLOGICAL AND ISOTOPIC STUDY OF DEEP SEA CORES PREVIOUSLY RAISED FROM THE NORTHEASTERN ATLANTIC OCEAN WILL BE PERFORMED IN ORDER TO MAKE A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE PAST HYDROLOGIC PATTERN OF THIS OCEAN DURING THE LAST CLIMATIC CYCLE.

A PRECISE STRATIGRAPHY WILL BE OBTAINED THROUGH MEASUREMENT OF 18 O/ 16 O VARIATION OF PLANKTONIC FORAMINIFERA ALONG THESE CORES. SUMMER AND WINTER SURFACE TEMPERATURE ESTIMATES WITH A STANDARD DEVIATION OF 1.OC. DEEP WATER TEMPERATURE WILL BE DEDUCED FROM 18 0/ 160 VARIATIONS OF THE CALCITIC TESTS OF THE BENTHIC FORAMINIFERA (ANIMALS LIVING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN, EVEN AT GREAT DEPTH).
SINCE DEEP WATER FORMATION OCCURS IN WINTER TIME, SURFACE WATER SINKING AREAS IN THE GLACIAL NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN WILL BE DETERMINED THE DEEP WATER TEMPERATURE ESTIMATES WITH THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE WINTER SURFACE HYDROLOGIC PATTERN : THESE SURFACE WATER SINKING AREAS WILL CORRESPOND TO THE COOLES ZONES.

DEEP SEA CORES WITH HIGH SEDIMENTATION RATE WILL BE RECOGNIZED BY OXYGEN ISOTOPE STRATIGRAPHY AND WILL BE USED TO DETERMINE THE DETAILS OF THE CLIMATIC TRANSITION. SUCH CORES ARE ONLY FOUND IN THE VICINITY OF THE CONTINENT, WHERE CONTINENTAL EROSION PRODUCTS ARE DEPOSITED. THESE SEDIMENTS ALSO CONTAIN POLLENS, TRANSPORTED FROM THE CONTINENT BY WINDS. WHILE PRECISE DATING OF CONTINENTAL POLLEN PROFILES IS IMPOSSIBLE BEYOND 50000 YEARS, A STUDY OF THE POLLEN FOUND ALONG DEEP SEA CORES WILL PROVIDE A CLOSE CORRELATION OF THE CLIMATIC EVOLUTION OF THE EUROPEAN CONTINENT WITH THAT OF THE ADJACENT ATLANTIC OCEAN.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
