RECONSTITUTION OF THE CLIMATE IN INTERTROPICAL WESTERN AFRICA DURING THE LAST GLACIAL MAXIMUM

Objective

THIS PROJECT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL BY INCREASING PALEOCLIMATIC ESTIMATES IN THE TROPICS. IT WILL IMPROVE THE CONTINENTAL RECORD FROM THE ARID ZONE OF EAST AFRICA WITH NEW DATA OBTAINED FROM THE ARID ZONE OF EAST AFRICA WITH NEW DATA OBTAINED FROM A LONG CONTINOUS WELL DATED CORE FROM 50000YR B.P. EMPHASIS SHOULD BE MADE ON PALEOBOTANICAL DATA WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE TIME CONTROL. ACCURATE INTERPRETATIONS ABOUT THE PAST VEGETATION WILL PROVIDE ALBEDO ESTIMATES WHICH ARE NECESSARILY USED IN THE CLIMATE SIMULATION EXPERIMENTS. THE AREA OF STUDY WILL ALLOW A GOOD COMPARISON BETWEEN CLIMATIC ESTIMATES FROM NEW PALEOBOTANICAL DATA AND UNIC PAST LAKE-LEVEL DATA. CONCLUSIONS WILL BE ESTABLISHED THROUGH MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH INCLUDING SEDIMENTOLOGY, GEOMORPHOLOGY, DIATOMS AND PHYTOLITS STUDIES.
