THE DEVELOPMENT OF LABORATORY CULTURING AND TOXICITY TESTING TECHNIQUES FOR FRESH WATER INVERTEBRATES

Objective

DEVELOPMENT OF ECOTOXICOLOGICAL TEST METHODS FOR THE FRESHWATER ENVIRONMENT.

THE FOLLOWING RESEARCH WILL BE INVESTIGATED IN THIS PROJECT:

- DEVELOPMENT OF CULTURING AND TOXICITY TESTING TECHNIQUES FOR A RANGE OF FRESHWATER MACROINVERTEBRATES OF THE CLASSES OF HYDROZOA, TURBELLARIA, GASTROPODA, OLIGOCHAETA, CRUSTACEA AND INSECTA. THESE WILL INCLUDE METHODS FOR BOTH LONG-THERM AND SHORT-TERM TOXICANT EXPOSURE.

- IDENTIFICATION OF THE MOST SENSITIVE LIFE-HISTORY STAGES OF THESE MACROINVERTEBRATE SPECIES;

- OF THE SPECIES TESTED, THOSE MOST SENSITIVE TO PARTICULAR TYPES OF POLLUTION WILL BE IDENTIFIED;

- QUANTIFICATION OF THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN TEST RESULTS FROM DIFFERENT SPECIES AND DIFFERENT LIFE-STAGES OF THE SAME SPECIES.
