Objective
STUDIES ON PRACTICES FOR THE PRESERVATION OF WILD SPECIES AND NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS.
A WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT PROJECT ENTITLED "PROJECT IBEX" (FULL NAME: "HABITAT USE AND THE POTENTIAL DISTRIBUTION OF IBEX (CAPRA IBEX L.)IN THE EUROPEAN ALPS"). AN ECOLOGICAL EVALUATION FOR REINTRODUCTION HAS BEEN INITIATED IN 1980 AND EXTENDED IN 1982 UNDER THE ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH PROGRAMMES OF THE COMMISSION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES. THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS IMPLEMENTED THROUGH THE WILDBIOLOGISCHE GESELLSCHAFT MUNCHEN 1977 E.V. (MUNICH SOCIETY FOR WILDLIFE BIOLOGY). THE RESEARCH PROJECT INTENDS TO EVALUATE THE ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF IBEX HABITAT AND TO DELINEATE THE ALPINE AREAS WHICH ARE SUITABLE FOR REINTRODUCTION. THE PROJECT ACCENTUATES THE CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF HIGH ALTITUDE ENVIRONMENT AND THE RESEARCH METHODS USED ARE FOCUSSED ON IBEX, BEING ON OF THE MOST CHARACTERISTIC AND SENSITIVE INDICATORS OF THIS HABITAT. HABITAT RESEARCH IS GIVEN ALL PRIORITY IN " PROJECT IBEX". THE CONSERVATION AND PROPER MANAGEMENT OF ALPINE HABITAT ENSURES BEST THE PRESERVATION OF THE HIGH ALPINE FAUNA TO WHICH IBEX BELONGS.
THE PROJECT DEVELOPS AND PRESENTS NEXT TO SPECIES ORIENTATED RESULTS A GENERALISED SCHEME FOR A WILDLIFE RANGE LAND SURVEY IN HIGH ALTITUDE ENVIRONMENT. IT, THEREFORE, USING ADVANCED METHODS LIKE AERIAL PHOTOINTERPRETATION IN COMBINATION WITH MULTISPECTRAL SCANNING SATELLITE IMAGERY (LANDSAT MSS). THE WORK RESULTS IN HABITAT SUITABILITY MAPS AND MANAGEMENT SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE WILDLIFE SPECIES INVOLVED.
