Objective
EVALUATION OF TRANSPORT, TRANSFER AND EFFECTS OF POLLUTANTS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT.
THIS PROJECT WILL STUDY THE TRANSPORT, THE TRANSFER AND THE EFFECTS OF VARIOUS POLLUTANTS (HEAVY METALS, NITROGENOUS AND PHOSPHOROUS SUBSTANCES) IN THE WATER COLUMN, SEDIMENTS AND ORGANISMS OF MEDITERRANEAN MARINE SYSTEMS REPRESENTING DIFFERENT FUNCTIONAL GROUPS (E.G. SUSPENSION FEEDERS, DEPOSIT FEEDERS, BURROWING ANIMALS). THE WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN TWO CONTRASTING AREAS:
- THE CORSICA CHANNEL, WHICH IS THE NARROW STRAIT BETWEEN THE TYRRHENIAN BASSIN AND THE GOLF GENOVA;
- A NEAR SHORE AREA SUCH AS THE SEA OF MONACO WHICH IS A CHARACTERISTIC SEMI-OPEN SYSTEM AS CAN BE OFTEN FOUND ALONG THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST.
BESIDES THE AIM BETTER UNDERSTANDING POLLUTANT FLUXES AND EVALUATING THEIR POTENTIAL HAZARD TO MARINE ECOSYSTEMS THE PROGRAMME HAS AS ANOTHER GOAL TO COMPLETE AN ELABORATION OF A METHODOLOGY WHICH USES MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DATA ACQUIRED.
