Objective
TO STUDY SPECIFIC PRACTICES OF MANAGEMENT OF UNINHABITED AREAS PROMOTED FOR RECREATION AREAS IN VIEW OF THE PRESERVATION OF WILD SPECIES.
AREA: TWO FOREST AREAS IN JUTLAND HAS BEEN CHOSEN FOR INTENSIVE RADIOTELEMETRY RESEARCH OF REACTIONS OF DEER TO DISTURBANCE. IN ADDITION SEVERAL DANISH FOREST AREAS ARE INVOLVED IN RESEARCH AT ORIENTEERING ARRANGEMENTS.
METHODS: ROE DEER AND RED DEER ARE CAUGHT IN THE WINTER MONTHS. ABOUT 10 ROE DEER AND 10 RED DEER ARE RADIOMARKED WITH A TRANSMITTER PLACED IN A COLLAR. THE TRANSMITTERS ARE DEVELOPED AND BUILT BY THE RADIOTECHNICIAN ATTACHED TO THE PROJECT.
LOCATION OF EACH DEER IS DETERMINED BY TRIANGULATION, TAKING BEARINGS PARTLY USING A CAR-MOUNTED DIRECTIONAL ANTENNA, PARTLY USING A HAND-HELD ANTENNA, BOTH CONNECTED TO RECEIVERS. ACTIVITY RECORDING IS AUTOMATICALLY CARRIED OUT USING A RECORDER CONNECTED TO RECEIVERS AND AN OMNIDIRECTIONAL ANTENNA PLACED HIGH IN THE TERRAIN.
TWO TAME ROE DEER IN AN ENCLOSURE ARE USED AS REFERENCE FOR THESE AUTOMATIC ACTIVITY RECORDINGS.
THE PATTERN OF ACTIVITY, THE MOBILITY, AND HOME RANGE IS RECORDED SYSTEMATICALLY ALL YEAR ROUND, AND THE ENERGY BUDGET OF THE DEER AT DIFFERENT TIMES OF THE YEAR IS ESTIMATED. IN THIS WAY THE VULNERABILITY OF DEER TO DISTURBANCE AT DIFFERENT SEASONS IS JUDGED.
IN 1981 A BASIC RESEARCH IS CARRIED OUT ON DEER IN A RATHER UNDISTURBED ENVIRONMENT. IN 1982-83 AND FURTHER YEARS DIFFERENT HUMAN ACTIVITIES ARE PLANNED TO TAKE PLACE, SO THAT THE REACTIONS OF DEER - AND OTHER ANIMALS - TO DISTURBANCE CAN BE RECORDED. THE PLANNED ACTIVITIES ARE ORIENTEERING RACES, BATTUES, SCOUT- AND MILITARY MANOEUVRES, JOGGING ACTIVITIES, TOURISM AND DOGS IN THE TERRAIN.
AT VARIOUS TIMES OF THE YEAR THE PROJECT IS DOING RESEARCH AT ORIENTEERING ARRANGEMENTS IN DIFFERENT FORESTS IN DENMARK. RECORDINGS ARE BEING MADE BY OBSERVATIONS AND BY UTILISING VIDEO EQUIPMENT.
IN SPRING 1981 A STUDENT CONNECTED TO THIS PROJECT IS STUDYING THE IMPACT OF DISTURBANCE FROM ORIENTEERING ARRANGEMENTS TO BREEDING RAPTORS, ESPECIALLY BUZZARD.
TRANSMITTERS FOR DEER AND BIRDS OF PREY ARE ALREADY BEING BUILT; TRANSMITTERS FOR HARES ARE ALREADY PLANNED.
