Objective
TO ASSESS THE SURVIVAL OF VIRUS IN THE ENVIRONMENT IN VIEW OF GROUND WATER PROTECTION.
THE EXTENT TO WHICH A VIRUS RETAINS ITS INFECTIVITY WHEN ABSORBED ON TO SOLIDS IS NOT WELL ESTABLISHED. ANY INVESTIGATION TO CORRELATE SPECIFIC CHEMICAL, BIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ENVIRONMENT IS DESIRED. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL EVIDENCE CANNOT BE EXPECTED TO GIVE GUIDANCE. IT IS PROPOSED TO:
1) CARRY OUT FURTHER STUDIES OF THE METHODS TO RECOVER DIFFERENT TYPES OF VIRUSES FROM LARGE SAMPLES OF WATER WITHOUT COMPLICATED EQUIPMENT AND OF SOLID-BOUND VIRUSES;
2) THE METHODOLOGICAL STUDIES SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT IN THE LABORATORY, WHERE VARIOUS SOLIDS SIMULATING A NATURAL SITUATION SHOULD BE EMPLOYED IN COLUMNS, SO THAT THE CONDITIONS OF ELUTION AND OF BINDING OF VIRUSES COULD BE STUDIED;
3) THE SURVIVAL OF SOLID-BOUND VIRUSES OF VARIOUS TYPES SHOULD BE STUDIED UNDER NATURAL CONDITIONS;
4) PARTICIPATION IN RECHARGE PROJECTION PILOT AND FULL SCALE OPERATION.
SUCH STUDIED ARE DIRECTLY RELEVANT FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SEVERAL EEC DIRECTIVES RELATED TO THE QUALITY OF WATER FOR DIFFERENT USES, WHERE IT IS STATED THAT THE WATER IN QUESTION SHOULD BE FREE FROM VIRUSES. BUT NOT HOW AN EXAMINATION SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
