Objective
TO DETERMINE THE CONDITIONS OF FORMATION OF OZONE IN THE AIR AND ITS CONCENTRATION VARIATIONS IN SPACE AND TIME.
FOUR BRITISH LABORATORIES:
A) ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT, HARWELL,
B) CENTRAL ELECTRICITY RESEARCH LABORATORIES, LEATHERHEAD,
C) GREATER LONDON COUNCIL, LONDON,
D) NATIONAL PHYSICAL LABORATORY, TEDDINGTON,
ARE JOINTLY CARRYING OUT MEASUREMENTS OF GROUND CONCENTRATIONS AS WELL AS VERTICAL PROFILES OF CONCENTRATIONS OF OZONE IN THE AIR, USING POINT MONITORS AND REMOTE SENSORS (DIFFERENTIAL ABSORPTION LIDARS) IN MOBILE LABORATORIES AND AT FIXED STATIONS ON SOME DAYS IN SUMMER, AROUND THE GREATER LONDON AREA. THE FORMATION AND DISAPPEARANCE OF OZONE IN THE ATMOSPHERIC BOUNDARY LAYER WILL BE INVESTIGATED AND COMPARED TO CONCENTRATIONS, PREDICTED BY AIR POLLUTION MODELS ACCORDING TO METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS, TRAFFIC POLLUTION, UV LIGHT INTENSITY ETC., IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF AIR POLLUTANTS AND THE APPEARANCE OF SECONDARY POLLUTANTS AS DELETERIOUS AS THOSE EMITTED FROM STACKS.
ANOTHER ORGANISATION, WARREN SPRING LABORATORY, STEVENAGE, IS PARTICIPATING IN THIS PROJECT WITHOUT EEC FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION.
