A METHOD FOR THE DETECTION OF LONG TERM MOXIOUSNESS OF POLLUTED TAP WATER

Objective

TO EXAMINE WHETHER PROGRESSIVE REDUCTION IN INDIVIDUALS' WATER CONSUMPTION COULD BE DUE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF "TASTE AVERSION" TO ONER OR MORE MOXIOUS SUBSTANCES PRESENT IN TAP WATER.

1) A POPULATION OF 60 MALE AND FEMALE SUBJECTS IS SELECTED IN THE PARIS AREA, ON THE BASIS OF VARIOUS CRITERIA. FOR A PERIOD OF 16 DAYS, EACH INDIVIDUAL IS REQUESTED TO DESCRIBE HIS/HER FEEDING PATTERN, TO MEASURE THE AMOUNT AND TYPE OF FLUID CONSUMED, NOTE THE PSYCHOLOGICAL RATING OF CORRESPONDING THIRST INTENSITY, AND TO NOTE HIS/HER OWN BODY WEIGHT.

THE SAME STUDY IS CARRIED OUT IN ONE SMALL CITY SUPPLIED WITH WATER FROM A DEEP SOURCE WHICH DOES NOT REQUIRE PURIFYING PROCEDURES.

THE URINARY DENSITIES AND BLOOD PRESSURE OF THESE TWO POPULATIONS ARE ALSO COMPARED.

2) ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS: ONE GROUP OF YOUNG RATS IS GIVEN WATER FROM A DEEP SOURCE. THE SECOND GROUP IS GIVEN TAP WATER. THE THIRD GROUP IS GIVEN DEEP SOURCE WATER CONTAINING LICL AT A CONCENTRATION OF 20 FOLD LESS THAN THAT REQUIRED TO PRODUCE CLINICAL SYMPTONS. VARIOUS CONSUMPTION PARAMETERS ARE RECORDED.

IF WATER CONSUMPTION IN ONE OF THESE GROUPS IS SEEN TO DECREASE PROGRESSIVELY, CONFIRMATORY TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT.
