Objective
TO DETERMINE THE CHANGES IN GROUNDWATER CHEMISTRY, E.G. SOLUBLE NITROGEN COMPOUNDS, IN THE LOWER GREENSAND AQUIFER.
INVESTIGATION OF THE CHEMICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL MECHANISMS A SAND AQUIFER (LOWER GREENSAND), WHICH MAY LEAD TO NATURAL ATTENUATION OF CONCENTRATIONS OF NITROGEN COMPOUNDS IN THE GROUNDWATER. THE WORK WILL BE CONCENTRATED ESPECIALLY ON PROCESSES OPERATIVE AT THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE CONFINED AND UNCONFINED PORTIONS OF THE AQUIFER, AND WITHIN THE CONFINED ZONE. THE STUDY FORM A NATURAL EXTENSION OF THE INTENSIVE STUDIES MADE BY THE CENTRE OF THE ORIGIN AND MOBILITY OF NITROGEN COMPOUNDS IN UNCONFINED AQUIFERS.
THE FIRST TWO PHASES (MAR 1981-MAR 1982) ARE DESIGNED TO ACHIEVE A THOROUGH APPRECIATION OF THE GEOCHEMICAL REGIMES IN THE COMPLETE AQUIFER SYSTEM IN THE PROPOSED STUDY AREA, SO THAT SPECIALLY DRILLED SAMPLING BOREHOLES MAY BE SITED ON ADEQUATE EVIDENCE.
THE THIRD AND FOURTH PHASES (APR 1982-APR 1983) WILL INCLUDE THE DRILLING, SAMPLING ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF TWO BOREHOLES IN THE CONFINED/UNCONFINED INTERFACE ZONE, TOGETHER WITH TWO DETAILED SURVEYS OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY PARAMETERS, AT TIMES OF HIGH AND LOW GROUNDWATER LEVELS. SELECTED SAMPLES WILL BE SUBJECTED TO ISOTOPIC ANALYSIS TO ASSIST IN INTERPRETATION OF THE AGE OF THE GROUNDWATER AND OF THE ORIGIN OF THE NITROGEN COMPOUNDS. SAMPLES WILL ALSO BE TAKEN AND ANALYSED FOR MICROBIAL ENUMERATION FROM SAMPLING POINTS WHERE GEOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS INDICATE THAT NITROGEN TRANSFORMATIONS ARE OCCURRING.
THE FINAL PHASE (MAY 1983-OCT 1983) WILL CONSIST OF THE FINAL INTERPRETATION OF DATA GATHERED DURING THE STUDY AND PREPARATION OF A FINAL REPORT.
