Objective
TO ESTABLISH A LABORATORY PROCEDURE FOR TESTING THE DISPERSION OF OIL SPILLS IN STANDARD CONDITIONS.
THIS RESEARCH IS LINKED WITH ANOTHER CONTRACT SUPPORTED BY DG XI, WITH THE SAME LABORATORY, TO TEST THE EFFICIENCY OF CHEMICAL DISPERSANTS FOR OIL SPILLED AT SEA.
AS MANY CHEMICAL DISPERSANTS ARE EXISTING, IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE A NUMBER OF TESTS PROCEDURE TO COMPARE, IN IDENTICAL CONDITIONS, THE WAY TO USE THEM, THEIR EFFICIENCY AND THEIR EFFECTS ON THE FAUNA AND FLORA OF THE SEAS. A LABORATORY WILL BE SPECIALLY EQUIPPED WITH A LARGE SEA WATER TANK IN WHICH WAVES CAN BE SIMULATED AND WITH ALL INSTRUMENTS NECESSARY TO SPILLING OIL, SPRAYING CHEMICAL DISPERSANTS, AND CONTROLLING THE RESULTS IN A WELL DEFINED PROCEDURE. THE LABORATORY TESTS WILL THEN BE COMPARED TO THE SEA TESTS RESULTS.
THE LONG TERM OBJECTIVE IS TO DEFINE A NUMBER OF STANDARD TESTS FOR ALL CHEMICAL DISPERSANTS TO BE USED FOR COMBATING OIL POLLUTION AT SEA.
