Objective
TO STUDY THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL MARSHES FOR TREATING DOMESTIC SEWAGE FROM SMALL COMMUNITIES.
THE PROPOSED RESEARCH WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN CLOSE COOPERATION BETWEEN THE "FONDATION UNIVERSITAIRE LUXEMBOURGEOISE" (BELGIUM) (DR. RADOUX M.) AND THE "CENTRE DES SCIENCES DE L'ENVIRONNEMENT" (UNIVERSITY OF METZ - FRANCE) (PROF. BLOCK J.C.).
THE AIM OF THE STUDY IS TO DEVELOP A NATURAL WASTE WATER TREATMENT PROCESS USING THE POTENTIALITY OF MARSHES. AN EXPERIMENTAL STATION BUILT IN ARLON (B) WILL ENABLE TO SIMULATE THE ECOLOGICAL FUNCTION OF THESE MARSHES. THE EXPERIMENT WILL BE DESIGNED TO OPTIMISE THE STRUCTURE OF THE "NATURAL ECOSYSTEM" BY IMPROVING THE CHOICE OF MACROPHYTES (TYPHA, PHRAGMITES ...) BY VARYING THE NUMBER OF PURIFICATION UNITS, THE FLOW OF POLLUTED WATER AND OTHER PARAMETERS.
TWO TYPES OF ASSAYS WILL BE CONDUCTED USING INDIVIDUAL TANKS IN PARALLEL("CARROUSEL SYSTEM") OR IN SERIES ("CASCADE SYSTEM"). THE EFFICIENCY IN TERMS OF PURIFICATION WILL BE EVALUATED BY MEASUREMENT OF SEVERAL PARAMETERS:
- NUTRIENT FLOW (NITROGEN, PHOSPHATE)
- HEAVY METALS (CD, PB, CR)
- HETEROTROPHIC POTENTIAL
- FECAL BACTERIA AND ALGAE
- FATE AND LOCATION OF POLLUTANTS
THIS STUDY, CARRIED OUT UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS, WILL ALLOW THE IMPROVEMENT OF NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS (MARSHES) FOR WASTE WATER TREATMENT WITHOUT ANY REQUIREMENT FOR ENERGY.
THE QUALITY OF THE TREATED WATER IS EXPECTED TO MEET STRICT ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR DIRECT RE-USE FOR AGRICULTURAL AND OTHER PURPOSES.
