Objective
1) TO DEVELOP METHODS OF INTERRELATING GEOCHEMICAL AND EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DATASETS
2) TO IDENTIFY POSSIBLE CAUSATIVE GEOCHEMICAL FACTORS IN CHRONIC DISEASE.
THE PROJECT IS DIVIDED INTO THREE CONSENTIVE PHASES:
PHASE 1
A LITERATURE SEARCH IS CARRIED OUT ON THE KNOWN DISTRIBUTION OF CHRONIC DISEASE AND CAUSATIVE AGENTS IN THE ENVIRONMENT OF NORTH EASTERN SCOTLAND, INCOLVING PREPARATION OF PRELIMINARY MAPS. COMPUTER DATA FILES OF MEDICAL STATISTICS ARE PREPARED FOR STATISTICAL ANALYSIS. STATISTICAL METHODS FOR ESTABLISHING CORRELATIONS BETWEEN DIFFERENT DATASETS ARE REVIEWED AND EVALUATED WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE NEW METHODS (SUCH AS CHARACTERISTIC ANALYSIS) WHICH ENABLE QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS TO BE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN DATASETS COLLECTED ON A DIFFERENT BASIS.
AS, CD, SE ARE DETERMINED ON APPROXIMATELY 500 STREAM SEDIMENT AND SOIL SAMPLES SELECTED TO REPRESENT THE MAIN LITHOGEOCHEMICAL UNITS OF THE STUDY REGION.
PHASE 2
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DATA, IN COMBINATION WITH THE GEOCHEMICAL DATA, ARE PERFORMED, USING THE TECHNIQUES IDENTIFIED IN PHASE 1 IN ORDER TO SELECT AREAS FOR DETAILED STUDY. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS PAID TO INTERELEMENT ASSOCIATIONS. ANALYSIS OF SEDIMENT AND SOIL SAMPLES FOR AS, CD, AND SE IS CARRIED OUT TO SUPPLEMENT THE GEOCHEMICAL DATA IN THESE AREAS.
PHASE 3
AREAS IDENTIFIED AS OF "HIGH RISK" FOR CHRONIC DISEASES SUCH AS CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE, MULTIPLE SCLENSIS AND STOMACH CANCER ARE STUDIED IN RELATION TO PERSONAL AND DIETARY HABITS. THE GEOCHEMISTRY OF ROCKS, SOILS, WATER, VEGETATION AND CROP IN THESE AREAS ARE INVESTIGATED TO DETERMINE THE LEVELS OF ESSENTIAL AND POTENTIALLY TOXIC TRACE ELEMENTS. TOTAL EXPOSURES TO SELECTED ELEMENTS ARE ESTIMATED, AS FAR AS POSSIBLE.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
