Objective
TO INVESTIGATE THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONING OF AN ESTUARINE ECOSYSTEM AS A BASIS FOR CONSERVATION STRATEGIES AND MANAGEMENT POLICY.
THIS RESEARCH PROJECT IS PART OF A LONGER PROGRAMME, TO ASSESS CHANGES IN THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE SEVERN ESTUARY BROUGHT ABOUT BY DEVELOPMENT IN ITS HINTERLAND AND POSSIBLY BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF A BARRAGE TO HARNESS TIDAL ENERGY FOR ELECTRICAL POWER GENERATION.
THE LEAST KNOWN ASPECTS OF THE SEVERN ESTUARY ENVIRONMENT ARE THE FOOD CHAIN LINKS, THE FLOW OF CARBON TROUGH THE FOOD WEB, AND THE BIO-ACCUMULATION AND BIO-CONCENTRATION OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS.
THE PROJECT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS:
1. HEAVY METALS IN SEVERN ESTUARY FOOD CHAINS
LEAD, ZINC, CADMIUM, AND COPPER BUDGETS, AND THEIR DISTRIBUTION AND TRANSFER IN A ROCKY-SHORE AND A SALT-MARSH AREA OF THE ESTUARY WILL BE ESTABLISHED. THIS WILL INCLUDE INVESTIGATIONS WITH SIMPLE ENCLOSED SYSTEMS TO DETERMINE LIKELY EFFECTS OF CHANGES IN TIDAL REGIME AND SALINITY ON HEAVY-METAL MOBILITY.
2. GRAZER-ALGAE INTERACTIONS IN THE SEVERN ESTUARY
THIS PART WILL INCLUDE INVESTIGATIONS ON:
- FEEDING RATES OF PATELLA VULGATA ON MACRO-ALGAE (MOSTLY FUCOIDS) AND MICROALGAE (MOSTLY DIATOMS) IN THE FIELD AND THE USE OF TRANSPLANT EXPERIMENTS;
- REPRODUCTIVE SUCCESS AND GROWTH OF DIATOM SPECIES IN RELATIONSHIP TO FEEDING RATES OF PATELLA, AND TO CHANGES OF THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL ENVIRONMENT.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
