Objective
TO DETERMINE THE TRENDS OF ACID DEPOSITION AND ASSESS : THE LONG TERM CONTRIBUTION OF LOCAL AND DISTANT POLLUTANT SOURCES TO WET AND DRY DEPOSITION IN EASTERN IRELAND.
DESCRIPTION: THIS RESEARCH PROJECT INCLUDES THREE ASPECTS:
1) MEASUREMENTS OF WET AND DRY DEPOSITION AND AIRBORNE CONCENTRATION OF GASEOUS AND PARTICULATE SOX AT A RURAL SITE AND IN DUBLIN CENTRE.
PARTICULATE SULPHUR LEVELS ARE MEASURED USING X-RAY DIFFRACTION. THIS PERMITS THE IDENTIFICATION AND QUANTIFICATION OF CATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PARTICULATE SULPHATE.
THE RESULTS COULD BE USED TO VALIDATE PREDICTIONS OF THE TRANSPORT OF SOX FROM THE NEARBY DUBLIN URBAN REGION TO THE RURAL SITE.
2) INCORPORATION OF THE RESULTS OF THE CHEMICAL ANALYSIS WITH CLIMATOLOGICAL DATA, ENABLING THE DETERMINATION OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WIND DIRECTION AND TRAJECTORIES ON OBSERVED SOX CONCENTRATIONS AND ACID DEPOSITION.
EXAMINATION OF LEAF YEASTS AS BIOLOGICAL INDICATORS OF SHORT TERM AIR QUALITY AND ACID DEPOSITION.
