Objective
TO ELABORATE A GENERALLY APPLICABLE METHODOLOGY FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF FLUVIAL ECOSYSTEMS.
THE PROJECT DEALS WITH THE ECOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT OF LARGE RIVER SYSTEMS, THE RHONE RIVER BEING STUDIED AS AN EXAMPLE. THE FLUVIAL ECOSYSTEM IS CONSIDERED IN ITS BROADEST SENSE: IT INCLUDES NOT ONLY AQUATIC BIOTOPES BUT ALSO SEMI-AQUATIC AND TERRESTRIAL PARTS OF THE RHONE VALLEY INFLUENCED BY THE RIVER (FLOODS, SURFACE- AND UNDERGROUND WATER).
THE INVESTIGATION HAS TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES:
A) THOROUGH INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY OF LARGE RIVER HYDROSYSTEMS: DISTRIBUTION AND DYNAMICS OF UNDER-SYSTEMS IN SPACE AND IN COURSE OF TIME, NATURAL OR MAN INDUCED MODIFICATIONS OF THESE UNDER-SYSTEMS, INTERGRATED EVOLUTION OF THE SYSTEMS UNDER STUDY USING GEOMORPHOLOGICAL, HYDROLOGICAL, BIOLOGICAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DATA;
B) ECOLOGICAL MANAGEMENT: OPERATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF THE SYSTEMS, EITHER A PRIORI, BASED ON OBJECTIVE, FUNDAMENTAL CRITERIA, OR, A POSTERIORI, BASED ON THE REQUIREMENT OF THE MANAGERS. ESTABLISHMENT OF ECOLOGICAL AND ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT OPTIONS: FITNESS OF DIFFERENT BIOTOPES. THE RESULTS WILL BE PROCESSED IN ORDER TO PERMIT COMPUTERISED HANDLING.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
