Objective TO DETERMINE THE TOTAL SO2 BUDGET OVER A LARGE INDUSTRIALIZED AREA IN FRANCE WITH A NUMBER OF TEAMS AND REMOTE SENSORS.IN JUNE 1983, DURING NEARLY TWO WEEKS, A JOINT CAMPAIGN WILL BE ORGANIZED IN AN INDUSTRIALIZED AREA WHERE MANY PLANTS EMIT IN TOTAL SOME HUNDREDS OF TONS OF SO2 A DAY. ABOUT 20 TEAMS FROM MEMBER STATES AND FROM COUNTRIES OUTSIDE EEC (SWEDEN, SPAIN, CANADA) WILL BRING A VARIETY OF INSTRUMENTS EITHER STATIONARY OR IN MOBILE LABORATORIES (LORRIES, AIRPLANES) TO TRY TO ESTABLISH A TOTAL BUDGET OF SO2, MEASURING THE INCOMING AND OUTGOING FLUXES AROUND THE BOUNDARIES OF THE FOS BERRE AREA. IN THE SAME TIME, METEOROLOGICAL CONDITIONS WILL BE MEASURED IN MANY POINTS OVER THIS AREA TO DETERMINE THE WIND FIELD AS A FUNCTION OF THE ALTITUDE AND THE TIME OF THE DAY TO CARACTERIZE THE BREEZE REGIME (WIND BLOWING FROM THE SEA AT DAY, AND FROM THE LAND AT NIGHT). NPL TEAM WILL BRING A MOBILE LORRY EQUIPPED WITH A DIAL TO MEASURE SO2 VERTICAL CONCENTRATION PROFILES ALONG THE ROUTES IN THIS CAMPAIGN.
