MICROBIOLOGICAL FOULING AS A CONSEQUENCE OF CLOSURE OF INDUSTRIAL WATER CIRCUITS

Objective

TO FIND PREVENTIVE MEASURES TO PROBLEMS RAISED BY THE MICROBIAL FOULING DUE TO THE CLOSURE OF INDUSTRIAL WATER CIRCUITS.

THIS PROJECT IS THE FOLLOW-UP OF THE WORK DONE UNDER CONTRACT ENV-510-F.

STUDY SUBJECTS WILL BE SELECTED IN THE FOLLOWING INDUSTRIES: PAPER MILLS, CHEMICAL WORKS, FOODS INDUSTRIES AND METALLURGY.

THE IDENTIFICATION OF THE PHENOMENA INVOLVED IN MICROBIOLOGICAL FOULING WILL BE PERFORMED ALONG THE FOLLOWING LINES:

- IDENTIFICATION AND COUNTING OF INVOLVED ORGANISMS
- STUDY OF THE MICROBIAL ECOLOGY OF CIRCUITS
- INFLUENCE OF PHYSICAL, PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND CHEMICAL CONDITIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENT.

THEN PREVENTIVE AND CURATIVE SOLUTIONS WILL BE TESTED USING MINERAL AND ORGANIC BIOCIDES. AN OPTIMAL STRATEGIY FOR THE APPLICATION OF SUCH PRODUCTS FOR PRACTICAL PURPOSES WILL BE DEFINED.
