Objective
TO DETERMINE WHETHER EXISTS AN INTERACTION BETWEEN THE EFFECTS OF 3 MAJOR AIR POLLUTANTS (SO2, NO2, O3) ON A NUMBER OF CROPS (BARLEY, BEANS, PEAS) IN CONDITIONS SIMILAR TO AMBIENT POLLUTION LEVELS.
IN 5 LABORATORIES OF 3 COUNTRIES (DK, NL, UK), THE SAME CULTIVARS OF THE SAME PLANTS ARE GROWN IN COMPARABLE CONDITIONS, EITHER IN OPEN TOP CHAMBERS OR IN CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT CHAMBERS, IN POTS AND SOIL OF WHICH THE COMPOSITION IS KNOWN.
ONE WEEK OLD PLANTS WILL THEN BE EXPOSED TO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS:
- OUTSIDE AIR FILTERED ON CHARCOAL (CONTROL CONDITION)
- FILTERED AIR PLUS 50 PPB OF SO2 ADDED CONTINUOUSLY
- FILTERED AIR PLUS 50 PPB OF NO2 ADDED CONTINUOUSLY
- FILTERED AIR PLUS 50PPB OF O3 ADDED DAILY FROM 9.30 TO 16.30
- FILTERED AIR PLUS ANY COMBINATION OF TWO POLLUTANTS (SO2 + NO2, SO2 + O3, NO2 + O3)
- FILTERED AIR PLUS THREE POLLUTANTS TOGETHER
THE FUMIGATION PERIOD WILL LAST AT LEAST FOUR WEEKS, DURING WHICH THE POLLUTANT CONCENTRATIONS, TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY AND INCOMING RADIATION WILL BE MONITORED.
AFTER HARVESTING, THE HEIGHT AND WEIGHT OF DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE PLANTS WILL BE MEASURED. AT LEAST, 40 POTS MUST BE EXPOSED TO ANY ONE CONDITION, AND REPLICATIONS OR REPETITIONS OF THE EXPERIMENT MIGHT BE PERFORMED.
IN EACH LABORATORY, STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE VARIANCE SHOULD DETERMINE IF THE EFFECTS OF ANY POLLUTANT ARE INDEPENDANT OF ANY OTHER ONE, OR WHETHER SYNERGISM OR ANTAGONISM OCCURS, THAT IS THE EFFECTS ARE NOT SIMPLY ADDITIVE.
COMPARISON BETWEEN THE RESULTS OF THE DIFFERENT LABORATORIES WILL PERMIT TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF LOCAL CONDITIONS, LIKE AIR TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY, ETC...

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
