Objective TO DETERMINE THE "INVISIBLE" EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTANTS, SUCH AS SO2 AND NO2, ON SOME CULTIVATED PLANTS AND TO INVESTIGATE THE RESISTANCE MECHANISMS IN THE STRAINS OF THESE SPECIES MUCH LESS SENSITIVE TO AIR POLLUTION. IN COLLABORATION WITH OTHER BRITISH LABORATORIES, PLANTS AND TREES OF ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE WILL BE GROWN IN OPEN TOP CHAMBERS WITH AMBIENT AIR, CLEAN AIR, OR AIR ENRICHED WITH LOW CONCENTRATIONS OF AIR POLLUTANTS (SO2, NO2) WHICH DO NOT CAUSE VISIBLE LEAF INJURY, BUT MODIFY PLANT METABOLISM AND IMPAIR THE GROWTH OF PLANTS. FOR ANY SPECIES, SOME STRAIN OR CULTIVAR MAY BE MUCH LESS SENSITIVE TO THE SAME CONCENTRATIONS OF AIR POLLUTANTS. AFTER ISOLATION AND CLONING OF THE RESISTIVE CULTIVARS, THE METABOLIC RESISTANCE MECHANISMS WILL BE INVESTIGATED AND COMPARED TO THOSE OF SENSITIVE STRAINS, IN IDENTICAL POLLUTANT CONCENTRATIONS, TO TRY TO OVERCOME THE GROWTH REDUCTION AND OTHER DELETERIOUS EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION.
