Objective
TO STUDY SHORT AND LONG TERM EFFECTS OF SO2, NOX, O3 AND ACID DEPOSITION ON PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND SOME CELLULAR AND BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES UNDER SIMULATED ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS.
THE RESPONSE OF PLANTS TO AIR POLLUTANTS EXPOSURE IS A COMPLEX PROCESS THAT DEPENDS NOT ONLY ON THEIR CONCENTRATION AND EXPOSURE TIME, BUT ALSO ON THE PLANT SPECIES AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS UNDER WHICH EXPOSURE OCCURS.
IN THIS STUDY THE PHOTOSYNTHETIC FLUX IN TERMS OF THE CO2 EXCHANGE WILL BE ANALYZED IN SOME TYPICAL SPECIES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN VEGETATION (QUERCUS ILEX, PINUS PINEA, PINUS PINASTER) AND SOME CULTIVATED SPECIES (NICOTIANA TABACUM, ZEA MAYS). MOREOVER, DETERMINATION OF SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASES (SOD) WHICH APPARENTLY PROTECT CELLS FROM THE OXYGEN TOXICITY CAUSED BY SUPEROXIDE AND THOSE ACTIVE SPECIES DERIVED FROM IT AND DETERMINATION OF PEROXIDASES AND CATALASES WHICH ARE ACTIVE IN THE DETOXIFICATION OF HYDROGEN PEROXIDE, WILL BE MADE.
A SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO SIMULATED ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS TO EVALUATE THE SPECIES RESPONSE TO SUBTOXICAL POLLUTANTS CONCENTRATION AND STRESS CONDITIONS. THE INJURY PROCESSES DUE TO HIGH POLLUTANTS CONCENTRATION IN NORMAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS WILL BE COMPARED WITH THOSE CAUSED BY LOWER LEVELS UNDER STRESS OR SHOCK CONDITIONS (TERMIC, WATER AND LIGHT STRESS).

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
