Objective
TO INVESTIGATE HOMOGENEOUS GAS PHASE OXIDATION REACTIONS OF RELEVANCE TO ACID PRECIPITATION.
THE RESEARCH PROJECT INVESTIGATES THE FOLLOWING HOMOGENEOUS GAS PHASE REACTIONS:
A) SO2 + OH + M ---- HOSO2 + M (M = H2O OR N2)
B) SO2 + HO2 ---- SO3 + OH
C) SO2 + CH3O2 ---- SO3 + CH3O
THE EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE USED PERMITS THE DIRECT OBSERVATION OF THE PRIMARY RADICAL SPECIES OH, HO2 AND CH3O2 BY FAST UV SPECTROPHOTOMETRY.
THE STUDIES ARE PERFORMED UNDER ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS, I.E. AT A PRESSURE OF 1 ATM AND A TEMPERATURE OF 25 C, IN PRESENCE OF WATER VAPOUR, WHICH MAY HAVE A CATALYTIC EFFECT ON THE REACTION.
THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK IS BACKED UP BY COMPUTER SIMULATIONS OF A COMPLETE MODEL TAKING INTO ACCOUNT ALL THE POSSIBLE ELEMENTARY REACTIONS INVOLVED IN THE OXIDATION OF SO2.
