ACIDIC ATTACK AND SULFATION OF STONE MONUMENTS

Objective

TO DEVELOP PROTECTIVE MATERIALS FOR STONE MONUMENTS.

THE PROJECT IS BASED ON THE FINDING THAT PROTECTION COATINGS SHOULD HAVE THE ABILITY OF PREVENTING OR MINIMIZING THE DIFFUSION OF CALCIUM IONS THROUGH THE LAYERS OF CORROSION.

THE WORK IS CARRIED OUT IN THREE MAIN PHASES:

1) TESTING VARIOUS COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS USED IN THE CONSERVATION OF STONE MONUMENTS TO ASSESS THE DIFFUSION OF CALCIUM IONS THROUGH THEM.

2) TESTING OF NEW MATERIALS, KNOWN TO POSSESS THE REQUIRED PROPERTIES, E.G. PIGMENTS WITH A POLYMER CARRIER USED IN ANTICORROSIVE PAINTS.

3) APPLICATION OF RESULTS FROM THE ABOVE PHASES, AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE CHARTER OF VENICE.
