EFFECTS OF ACID RAIN ON THE CYCLING OF METALS AND ANIONS IN 3 DANISH SPRUCE FOREST ECOSYSTEMS.

Objective

TO DESCRIBE AND QUANTIFY THE CYCLING, INPUTS AND OUTPUTS OF BASE CATIONS, ANIONS AND HEAVY METALS IN 3 SPRUCE FOREST ECOSYSTEMS ON VERY ACID SOIL, ACID SOIL AND NEUTRAL SOIL, RESPECTIVELY.
TO DESCRIBE AND QUANTIFY THE INTERNAL ACID PRODUCTION ON THE ECOSYSTEMS.
TO DEVELOP A MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR THE TOTAL ION BALANCE OF THE ECOSYSTEM.

THE PRESENTLY PROPOSED PROJECT INTENDS TO UTILIZE AND EXTEND THE RUNNING LYSIMETER (SOIL WATER SAMPLER) STUDY ON THE LEACHING OF ELEMENTS FROM 3 DIFFERENT LOCALITIES IN DENMARK (ALL OF WHICH ARE 50 YEARS OLD SPRUCE FOREST).

1. KLOSTERHEDE, WESTERN JUTLAND (SOIL PH 3-4)
2. TANGE, CENTRAL JUTLAND (SOIL PH 5-6)
3. STRODAM, NORTHERN ZEALAND (SOIL PH 4)

ALL 3 HEAVY STATIONS ARE LOCATED CLOSE TO NORMAL WEATHER STATIONS AND ATMOSPHERIC HEAVY METAL DEPOSITION STATIONS. THE STATIONS AT TANGE IS LOCATED AT THE EMEP-STATION RUN BY THE NATIONAL EPA. ON EACH STATION 6 LYSIMETERS ARE MOUNTED, OF WHICH 3 BELOW THE A-HORIZON AND 3 BELOW THE B-HORIZON.

THE PERCOLATES ARE ANALYSED FOR AL, CA, MG, K, NA, FE, CR, NI, PB AND ZN PLUS TOTAL ORGANIC MATTER. STARTING FROM JANUARY 1984 SULPHATE, NITRATE, CHLORIDE AND AMMONIA ARE INCLUDED IN THE ANALYSES. WATER SAMPLES ARE COLLECTED MONTHLY. SOIL SAMPLES ARE ANALYSED FOR EXCHANGEABLE AND TOTAL AMOUNTS OF THE ALREADY MENTIONNED ELEMENTS, AS WELL AS FOR PH, TEXTURE, ORGANIC MATTER AND CEC FROM THE A-, B- AND C-HORIZONS.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
