EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTANTS ON PLANTS, AQUATIC AND TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS IN THE VICINITY OF AN ALUMIUM FACTORY IN GREECE

Objective

A. INVESTIGATION OF ANY NEW PLANTS BIOINDICATOR FOR F-ACCUMULATION. THERE IS GOOD EVIDENCE THAT OLEA EUROPAEA IS SUCH AN INDICATOR.
B. POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENT OF A ELECTRON-MICROSCOPICAL METHOD TO DETERMINE THE NATURE OF AIR POLLUTION.

THE ECOTOXICITY OF HYDROGEN FLUORIDE (HF), HEAVY METALS (CD, PB, ZN, MN, AL) AND THE PRECIPITATIONS IN PLANT ORGANISMS AS WELL AS IN THE STABILITY AND FUNCTION OF THE TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS AROUND THE ALUMINIUM FACTORY (ALUMINIUM OF GREECE) WILL BE INVESTIGATED.

THE TERRESTRIAL VEGETATION IN THE AREA MAINLY CONSISTS OF HARDLEAF AND EVERGREEN SPECIES, WHICH PHYSIOGNOMICALLY BELONG TO THE MACCHIE FORMATION, PHYTOSOCIOLOGICALLY THE AREA IS CHARACTERIZED BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE QUERCION ILICIS ALLIANCE AND THE ANDRACHNO-QUERCETUM ASSOCIATION.

CLEARLY VISIBLE EFFECTS AT THE MACROSCOPICAL LEVEL, E,G, CLOROSIS AND NECROSIS OF LEAVES, FRUIT ABSCISSION, INHIBITION AND DISTURBANCE OF NORMAL PLANT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, HAVE ALREADY BEEN RECORDED. ANIMALS, ESPECIALLY SHEEP GRAZING IN THIS AREA HAVE PRESENTED DENTAL AND OSSEOUS LESIONS.

HIGH CONCENTRATIONS IN FLUORIDE AND HEAVY METALS AND THE RAIN IF IT WOULD PROVED TO BE VERY ACID COULD LEAD TO IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO THE TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEM.

THIS HYPOTHESIS WILL BE CHECKED.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
