THE CONTRIBUTION OF ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION AND AIR TRAJECTORY VARIABILITY TO THE CHANGING PATTERN OF ACIDIC DEPOSITION IN EUROPE

Objective

TO ASSESS THE POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTION OF CHANGING ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS TO THE VARIABILITY OF ACIDIC DEPOSITION ON YEARLY AND, IN PARTICULAR, DECADAL TIMESCALES.

THE RESEARCH PROJECT INCLUDES:

- COLLECTION AND COLLATION OF CHEMISTRY DATA (EMEP, OECD, EACN ETC). CO-OPERATION AND COLLABORATION HAS ALREADY BEEN ESTABLISHED WITH ALL RELEVANT PARTIES. IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO UNDERTAKE SOME QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF THE COMPOSITION DATA. ACIDIC SPECIES DATA WILL BE ANALYSED AND SUMMARISED BY TECHNIQUES UNDER DEVELOPMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY. THESE TECHNIQUES ALLOW THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PROPORTIONAL IONIC COMPOSITION AND TRAJECTORY LENGTH TO BE ELUCIDATED. BASIC DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS WILL BE DERIVED, SUCH AS THE FREQUENCY OF "CONCENTRATION" AND "DEPOSITION" EPISODES.

- TRAJECTORY AND WEATHER-TYPE ANALYSIS ON AN "EVENT" BASIS FOR THE PERIOD OF "DAILY" CHEMICAL DATA. A NUMBER OF RECEPTOR SITES WILL BE CHOSEN ON THE BASIS OF "REPRESENTATIVENESS". IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO DEVISE NEW "WEATHER TYPE" INDICIES. OTHER PERTINENT FACTORS, SUCH AS FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTIONS OF PRECIPITATION, PRECIPITATION TYPE, AND STABLE ATMOSPHERIC LAYERS, WILL BE CONSIDERED.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
