Objetivo
TO QUANTIFY CLIMATE CHANGES DURING THE LAST GLACIAL/INTERGLACIAL.
A NUMBER OF SEDIMENT CORES WILL BE OBTAINED FROM LAKE SITES OF VOLCANIC ORIGIN IN THE ITALIAN PENINSULA. AT LAGHI MONTICCHIO IN THE CENTRE OF THE PENINSULA AT THE LATITUDE ON NAPLES, 25 M OF SEDIMENT WAS FOUND WITHOUT REACHING BOTTOM. FURTHER DRILLING AT LAGHI MONTICCHIO TO GREATER DEPTHS WILL BE DONE.
IT IS ALSO PLANNED TO CORE LAGO DI VICO AND LAGO DI MONTEROSI, BOTH IN THE REGION OF ROME, ONCE MORE. BOTH SITES ARE KNOWN TO CONTAIN SEDIMENTS OF GLACIAL AGE.
FURTHER SMALL BASINS OF VOLCANIC ORIGIN WHICH CONTAINS LAKES OR MARSHES WILL ALSO BE INVESTIGATED.
THE CORES WILL BE ANALYSED FOR THEIR FOSSIL POLLEN CONTENT AND POLLEN DIAGRAMS WILL BE PREPARED. CRITICAL HORIZONS IN THE CORES WILL BE DATED BY RADIOCARBON DATING. ACCELERATOR DATES WILL BE USED BY WHICH VERY SMALL PIECES OF ORGANIC DEBRIS OF UPLAND ORIGIN SUCH AS PIECES OF CHARCOAL, SEEDS OR LEAVES CAN BE DATED. THE CORES WILL BE ALSO STUDIED FOR THEIR CONTENT OF VOLCANIC ASHES OR TEPHRAS.
THE DATA OBTAINED BY POLLEN ANALYSIS WILL BE TRANSFERRED INTO PALEOCLIMATIC INFORMATION BY THE USE OF TRANSFER FUNCTIONS.
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RESPONSE SURFACE APPROACH REQUIRES A SUBSTANTIAL DATA BASE OF SURFACE SAMPLES. THESE WILL BE COLLECTED ACCORDING TO A COMMON PROTOCOL. THESE WILL CONSIST OF POLLEN COUNTS OBTAINED FROM MUD-SAMPLES AT THE MUD-WATER INTERFACE OF LAKES OF CERTAIN PHYSICAL AND SIZE CHARACTERISTICS IN AREAS WHERE THERE IS SUFFICIENT NATURAL VEGETATION TO PERMIT A REALISTIC ASSESSMENT OF THE NATURAL FOREST COVER.
A MINIMUM OF 25 SURFACE SAMPLES WILL BE SOUGHT.
THE FOSSIL POLLEN COUNTS AND THE SURFACE SAMPLES CREATE A SUBSTANTIAL DATA BASE WHICH WILL BE HANDLED BY COMPUTER PROCEDURES.
THE RESPONSE SURFACE TECHNIQUE WILL BE USED TO OBTAIN PALEOCLIMATIC RECONSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HOLOCENE AND, FOR OLDER PERIODS, INCLUDING THE COMPLETE LAST GLACIAL/INTERGLACIAL CYCLE.
ANALOGUES WILL BE SOUGHT BY REVIEWING SURFACE SAMPLE DATA FROM OUTSIDE AS WELL AS WITHIN THE ITALIAN PENINSULA FOR WHICH SUBSTANTIAL INFORMATION IS ALREADY ON COMPUTER FILE AT DURHAM. A COMPARISION WILL ALSO BE MADE OF THE EXPRESSION OF GLACIAL CLIMATES IN THE LAND RECORD WITH THE CLIMATES INFERRED FROM MARINE CORE DATA.
