PAST CLIMATIC CHANGES IN EUROPE AND THE PALAEOCLIMATOLOGY OF LAST GLACIAL / INTERGLACIAL CYCLE

Objective

RECONSTRUCTION OF PAST CLIMATE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN.

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCH CONCERNS PALEOCLIMATIC RECONSTITUTION IN NE SPAIN, BETWEEN THE LAST TWO INTERGLACIAL STAGES.THIS APPROACH WILL BE BASED ON DATA FURNISHED MAINLY BY POLLEN ANALYSIS.OCCASIONALLY DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL STUDIES WILL BE CARRIED OUT.
THIS OBJECTIVES REQUIRES :
1.FIELD SAMPLE ACQUISITION.
2.COMPLETION OF THE POLLEN ANALYSIS FOR EACH PHYSIOGRAPHICAL UNIT WITH WELL DEFINED CLIMATIC FEATURES.
3.CORRELATION OF DIFFERENT RECORDS AND
4.THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE PALAEOCLIMATIC PATTERN FOR EACH UNIT.
THE LAST STEP WILL BE FOCUSED ON ESTABLISHING THE REGIONAL PALEOCLIMATIC EVOLUTION IN ORDER TO CHECK GLOBAL PALEOCLIMATIC MODELS.
THREE AREAS IN THE NE OF THE IBERIAN PENINSULA HAVE BEEN CHOSEN FOR SAMPLING.THE ABOVE AREAS, OF MARKED GEOMORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES ARE AS FOLLOWS :PYRENEAN AREA (1,500-3,000M ABOVE SEA LEVEL).AT PRESENT, PARTIAL POLLEN DATA OF THE LLESTUI AND LLAUSET GLACIOLACUSTRINE DEPOSITS ARE AVAILABLE, SPANNING THE LAST 30,000 YEARS.THE AIM IS TO COMPLETE SAMPLING OF BOTH SEQUENCES AND THUS OBTAIN POLLEN DIAGRAMS COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF THE NORTHERN PYRENEAN BORDER.PRE-PYRENEAN AREA (500-1,500M ABOVE SEA LEVEL).AT PRESENT, POLLEN DATA OF A LACUSTRINE SEQUENCE IN THE VOLCANIC AREA OF OLOT ARE AVAILABLE.THESE HAVE BEEN OBTAINED FROM WIDELY SPACED SAMPLES.THE SEQUENCE COVERS THE LAST 127,000 YEARS.THE OBJECTIVE IS TO CARRY OUT FURTHER, DENSER SAMPLING OF THE AREA AND OBTAIN MATERIAL WHICH WOULD ENABLE PRECISE DATING OF THE DISTINCT EVENTS.POLLEN AND DENDROCHRONOLOGICAL STUDIES ARE ALSO TO BE CARRIED OUT IN A PEATY SEQUENCE SITUATED AT AN ALTITUDE OF AROUND 1,000M AND SPANNING THE LAST 12,000 YEARS.LOWLAND AND LITTORAL AREA (0-500M ABOVE SEA LEVEL).VARIOUS SAMPLES FROM DELTAIC AREAS AND SHALLOW LAKES HAVE ALREADY BEEN OBTAINED.THESE GENERALLY SPEAKING, COVER THE LAST 10,000 YEARS, ALTHOUGH IN EXCEPTIONAL CASES, TRAVERTINE DEPOSITS CAN GO BACK IN AGE TO 70.000 YEARS.POLLEN ANALYSIS OF THE ABOVE SERIES IS TO BE CARRIED OUT.
